Working Group Post Mortem Practice and Procedures
Working Group Post Mortem Practice and Procedures
On 3 May 2005 the Government appointed Dr. Deirdre Madden to complete a final report on post-mortem practice and organ retention in Irish hospitals since 1970. This Report was submitted to Mary Harney, T.D. Tánaiste and Minister for Health and Children, on 21 December 2005 and published following decision of the Government on 18 January 2006.
The Terms of Reference of the Report focused on the issue of paediatric post mortem examinations. The Report recommended the establishment of a Working Group to examine the implementation of its recommendations to other post mortems, namely those carried out on babies who died before birth, minors and adults.
Ron Smith-Murphy, National Chairperson of ISANDS and Ann Canning, National Secretary of ISANDS were member of the Working Group and made representation on behalf of parents and families.
The report was completed and submitted to the Minister of Health & Children and has now been published.

Hopefully the recommendations for legislation will be considered and laws enacted so that standard practices and guidelines will apply.
